In a major escalation, Iran—currently embroiled in tensions with Israel—is preparing legislation to withdraw from the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT). Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei confirmed that the Parliament is drafting a bill in response to what Tehran describes as intolerable conditions.
Baghaei reiterated Iran’s official stance against weapons of mass destruction, in line with a religious decree by Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei. The proposed move comes amid growing regional instability and international scrutiny over Iran’s nuclear activities.
India has maintained a distance from the NPT since its inception. In this context, Iran’s possible withdrawal from the NPT carries significant geopolitical implications.
The NPT, established in 1970, has been signed by 187 countries, prohibiting them from developing nuclear weapons but allowing the use of atomic energy for peaceful purposes under the supervision of the Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

Such a move could also isolate Iran internationally, making trade and diplomatic relations with other nations nearly impossible.
