Amit Kshatriya, a 20-year-old NASA veteran and an Indian-American, has been named as the ASA’s new ‘exploration-focused’ associate administrator, confirmed the US space agency in an official statement.

“Acting NASA Administrator Sean P. Duffy Wednesday named exploration-focused Amit Kshatriya as the new associate administrator of NASA, the agency’s top civil service role," a NASA statement said.

Who Is Amit Kshatriya?

Amit was born in Wisconsin and is the son of Indian immigrants.He pursued his education at two prestigious institutions — the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) and the University of Texas at Austin.He is also one of fewer than 100 people in history to serve as a mission control flight director.He joined NASA in 2023 and has also been honoured with Outstanding Leadership Medal for his role as lead flight director during the 50th expedition to the Space StationHe has also been a recipient of the Silver Snoopy Award — a special honor given by astronauts to individuals who have made significant contributions to mission success. He was awarded for his work as robotics officer on the Commercial Orbital Transportation Services (COTS) Dragon demonstration mission to the ISS.

According to NASA, he will now serve as the highest-ranking civil servant at the agency.

Prior to holding this position, he was the deputy in charge of the Moon to Mars Programme. His work included programme planning and implementation for crewed missions to the Moon through the Artemis campaign in preparation for humanity’s first mission to Mars.

“Promoting Kshatriya to NASA’s top ranks puts America’s return to the Moon through Artemis at the very core of our agency. The move exemplifies President Donald J Trump and Duffy’s seriousness about returning Americans to the Moon and before China," the statement said.
