Anurag Bajpayee, the Indian-origin CEO of clean water startup Gradiant, has been arrested over an allegation of paying for services at high-end brothels. Bajpayee’s name appeared in court documents from the Boston area along with the names of several individuals accused of paying significant hourly fees for sexual services earlier in 2025, reported The New York Times.

Backing their CEO, Gradiant, in an official statement, said, “We believe in the justice system and are confident that this will resolve favourably in due course. Unrelated to this, Gradiant will continue to pursue excellence in technological innovation and to strive towards our mission to ensure clean water for all society."

Who Is Anurag Bajpayee?

Anurag Bajpayee is the co-founder and CEO of Gradiant, a Boston-based company that develops advanced technologies for water and wastewater treatment.

The Indian-origin CEO has completed a PhD in Mechanical Engineering from MIT.

He began his career in research, holding positions at both MIT and the University of Missouri.

Anurag Bajpayee made a significant remark in the cleantech industry, leading Gradiant from its early days as an MIT spinout in 2013 to a globally recognised company now worth over USD 1 billion.

The company has expanded its operations to over 25 countries under his leadership.

Bajpayee began his academic journey at La Martiniere College in Lucknow. He then pursued a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Missouri-Columbia.

He continued his education at MIT, receiving a Master’s in 2008 and a PhD in Mechanical Engineering by 2012.

His PhD work made a notable impact in the field of water treatment, particularly through the development of a membrane-free desalination method that was named one of the “Top 10 World-Changing Ideas" by Scientific American.
