Jeffrey Epstein, American Financier: Wealthy financier and sex offender Jeffrey Epstein has once again made it to the headlines, following the release of a long-awaited trove of documents by the Justice Department. While the documents contained many of his contacts, flight logs and evidence that the government amassed against him, they also included the names of his victims and associates.

Jeffrey Epstein was accused of running a large network of sex rackets with minor girls. Awaiting trial, he reportedly killed himself in his jail cell in 2019.

With new details surfacing from the legal government documents, here's all you need to know about his life, criminal cases, connections and more.

Who Was Jeffrey Epstein?

Known for being a hedge fund manager, Jeffrey Epstein was known for being “rich, famous, and influential," even having ties with presidents. His acquaintances once included US President Donald Trump, former President Bill Clinton, and even Britain's Prince Andrew. Epstein was initially arrested in 2005 in Palm Beach, Florida, after being accused of paying a minor girl for sex.

Following the same, a number of underage girls came forward, reporting similar sexual abuse, which led the financier to plead guilty in 2008 to a felony charge involving a single minor victim. He ended up serving 13 months in a prison work-release programme. According to the charges levied by the United States District Court, Jeffrey Epstein “sexually exploited and abused" dozens of minor girls in his home in Manhattan, New York, and Palm Beach in Florida, among other locations. In particular, Epstein even enticed and recruited minors to visit his mansions in a bid to engage in sexual acts with him, for which he would pay them hundreds of dollars.

Likewise, he paid some of his victims to recruit other girls for similar abuse and exploitation. Many of his victims were described to be as young as 14 at the time they were abused. Besides maintaining the network of minors for sexual abuse and exploitation, Epstein worked and conspired with many others who facilitated his activities, including contacting victims and scheduling their encounters.

Epstein's association with politicians and celebrities further amplified the attention. Donald Trump while speaking to New York magazine in 2002 described him as a “terrific guy," further adding, “He’s a lot of fun to be with. It is even said that he likes beautiful women as much as I do, and many of them are on the younger side." Following the financier's arrest, Trump along with Bill Clinton distanced themselves from him. It was on August 10, 2019 when Epstein was found dead in a high-security New York jail.

It is worth mentioning the latest tranche of documents did not reveal much about his case.
