US President Donald Trump said military action against Iran was “absolutely" possible if talks on a nuclear deal failed. He said that there was “not much time" to reach an agreement on its nuclear program.

When asked if military action was an option, Donald Trump said, “If necessary, absolutely. If it requires military, we’re going to have military. Israel will obviously be very much involved in that, be the leader of that."

What Pentagon Chief Said On Iran

The comments by the US President come after the Pentagon chief said that it is for Iran to interpret whether the recent deployment of the B-2 bombers to a US-British base in the Indian Ocean is intended as a message.

As many as six B-2 bombers were relocated in March to a US-British military base on the Indian Ocean island of Diego Garcia amid rising tensions with Iran.

When asked if the B-2 deployment was meant as a message to Iran, US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth said, “We’ll let them decide. “It’s a great asset … it sends a message to everybody. President Trump’s been clear … Iran should not have a nuclear bomb. We very much hope – the President is focused on doing that peacefully."

The US has accused Iran of secretly trying to develop nuclear weapons by enriching uranium to levels beyond what is needed for civilian energy purposes although Tehran insists its nuclear programme is purely for generating electricity and other peaceful purposes.

Iran had reached a deal in 2015 with then-US President Barack Obama as well as the UK, France, China, Russia and Germany as per which the country would limit its nuclear activities and allow inspectors from the Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) into the country in return for sanctions relief. In 2018, Donald Trump abandoned the deal as he said that it did too little to stop Iran’s potential pathway to a nuclear bomb.
