Tomiko Itooka, the world's oldest person, passed away peacefully on December 29th at the age of 116 in a nursing home in Ashiya, Hyogo Prefecture, in Central Japan.

Born in Osaka in 1908, Itooka had held the title since the passing of Maria Branyas last year.

Known for her love of bananas and Calpis, a popular Japanese yogurt drink, Itooka accepted the news of her record-breaking age with a simple "Thank you."

She lived a remarkably active life, playing volleyball in high school and even conquering Mount Ontake twice.

After her husband passed away in 1979, Itooka continued to live independently in Nara. She managed the office of her husband's textile factory during World War II and later dedicated herself to her family. Itooka is survived by one son and one daughter, along with five grandchildren.

The title of the world's oldest person now belongs to Brazilian nun Inah Canabarro Lucas, who was born just 16 days after Itooka.
