US President Donald Trump on Monday announced that he will travel to China in April next year, following a telephone conversation with Chinese President Xi Jinping.
Trump said he has also invited Xi to Washington for a state visit “later in the year," signalling a renewed push to stabilise relations with China.
The announcement came through a post on Trump’s Truth Social account, where he described the US-China relationship as “extremely strong" and said the call built on their “highly successful" in-person meeting three weeks ago in Busan, South Korea.
“President Xi invited me to visit Beijing in April, which I accepted, and I reciprocated where he will be my guest for a State Visit in the U.S. later in the year," Trump wrote, adding that both sides agreed on the importance of maintaining regular communication.
Call Focuses On Taiwan, Trade And Ukraine
The White House confirmed the call took place on Monday morning, while Beijing released additional details, saying the leaders discussed trade, Taiwan, and the conflict in Ukraine.
According to the Chinese foreign ministry, Xi reiterated China’s long-held position that Taiwan’s reunification with the mainland is “an integral part of the post-war international order."
The call comes amid fresh tensions after Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi suggested that Japan’s military could intervene if China were to move against Taiwan — remarks that drew swift condemnation from Beijing.
Xi also told Trump that China and the United States, who fought on the same side in World War II, should “jointly safeguard the victory" and manage differences responsibly.
The United States maintains a policy of “strategic ambiguity" on Taiwan, it does not support Taiwanese independence, but is legally required to provide military equipment to help the island defend itself.
The Trump administration recently approved a US$330 million arms package for Taiwan, prompting a sharp protest from Beijing, which said the sale “grossly violated" the one-China principle.
Trade, Ukraine Also On Agenda
The two leaders also discussed trade issues, although neither side announced breakthroughs. Beijing described bilateral ties as moving in a “steady and positive direction" since the Busan summit, with Xi urging more “constructive progress" in the coming months.
On Ukraine, Xi told Trump the conflict must be resolved “at its root," without elaborating on any specific proposal.
