West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader took on the Centre yet again over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, saying it is being used to snatch away the rights of women, and urged them to fight with their kitchen tools if their names are removed from the voter list.
Addressing a public event in Krishnanagar, Mamata Banerjee said, “Why is SIR not taking place in Assam? Is it because it’s a BJP state? They will snatch away the rights of mothers and sisters under the garb of SIR. They will bring the Delhi Police during the election to intimidate women."
Addressing the women, the Bengal CM said, “If they cut your names, you have the tools in your house, right? The ones you use for cooking? Do you have the strength? You won’t let them go if they cut your names, right? The women will lead the fight from the front, and the men will stand behind them. I want to see if the strength of our women is bigger than the BJP’s."
She further said that she did not believe in communalism. “I always do secular politics. Whenever the election comes, the BJP tries to use money and bring people from other states to divide votes.
Speaking about the recent Gita recital in Kolkata, she said, “All of us do Gita Path at home. What was the need for a public meeting for this? Our gods reside in our hearts. Those who pray to Allah, do so in their hearts. During Ramzan and during Durga Puja, we pray together. Those who are shouting ‘Gita, Gita’ should remember what Lord Krishna said. He said Dharma means purity, humanity, and not violence, discrimination and division."
Banerjee said eminent personalities like Ramakrishna Paramahamsa, Swami Vivekananda, Rabindranath Tagore and Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose had not divided people. “Then who are you? They are looting votes, and spreading lies? They did ‘notebandi’, and now they are doing ‘votebandi’. They plan to win the elections in Bengal, after which they will remove all people so that no one speaks Bengali and erase the legacy of the Independence movement," she alleged.
“I was born in the land of Bengal, and I will speak in Bengali. Even if you cut my throat, it will not matter. Those who sacrificed their lives for the nation are now forced to prove whether they are citizens of India. Don’t you have shame?" she added.
