Donald Trump and Volodymyr Zelensky had a brief meeting at Pope Francis’s funeral in the Italian capital on Saturday, marking their first encounter since a tense White House clash, as the former US president urges Ukraine to seek a peace deal with Russia.

Pope Francis, the first Latin American to lead the Catholic Church, died on April 21 after a long illness. After his 12-year papacy, marked with health struggles, he will be buried today in a break from tradition—by prisoners and migrants—at St. Mary Major Basilica in Rome.

No specifics were shared about the meeting, which comes at a crucial moment in efforts to end the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia, reported Reuters.

The funeral is witnessing the presence of several world leaders, including President Droupadi Murmu, US President Donald Trump, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

According to reports, the 90-minute open-air event is being co-observed by 220 cardinals, 750 bishops, and over 4,000 priests.
