A magnitude 5.5 earthquake struck near the city of Sorkheh in Semnan Province, according to Iranian authorities. Iran is one of the most seismically active countries in the world, located on the Alpine-Himalayan belt where the Arabian and Eurasian tectonic plates meet. This geological setting results in frequent seismic activity. On average, the country experiences around 2,100 earthquakes annually, with approximately 15 to 16 registering at magnitude 5.0 or higher.
In recent days, Iran recorded several notable tremors as a magnitude 4.2 earthquake struck near Kashmar in Razavi Khorasan Province on June 19 while on June 17, another 4.2-magnitude quake hit near Borazjan in Bushehr Province.
The earthquake comes as Iran remains on heightened military alert amid escalating tensions with Israel.
