Five Chinese nationals were arrested in Thailand’s Chatuchak district for entering a restricted area and removing critical documents from the site of a collapsed building after two powerful earthquakes had rocked the city last week.

The police said that they violated an official directive and tried to remove documents, including blueprints and other paperwork, from the premises, according to local media reports.

The incident was reported after an under-construction 33-storey office building in Bangkok’s Chatuchak district collapsed on March 28 due to the earthquake, which originated in Myanmar, killing over 1,700 people.

The site was declared a restricted disaster zone by the authorities after the tragedy.

According to Thai media reports, the five Chinese nationals entered the site without due permission and were observed by witnesses taking the documents out of the restricted zone.

The documents allegedly contained architectural blueprints and other building project materials, raising concerns about their intent. A legal officer’s complaint, filed on March 30, 2025, seeks to hold them accountable for violating the emergency order issued by Bangkok’s Governor.

The collapsed building was being constructed by a joint venture involving a Chinese firm and a prominent Thai construction company.
