Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk on Monday said a train track, which was crucial for delivering aid to Ukraine, between Warsaw and Lublin was destroyed in an “unprecedented act of sabotage" over the weekend.
In a post on X, Tusk said: “Unfortunately, the worst fears have been confirmed. On the Warsaw-Lublin route (Mika village), an act of sabotage has occurred. The explosion of an explosive device destroyed the railway track. Emergency services and the prosecutor’s office are working at the scene. On the same route, closer to Lublin, damage has also been identified."
“We will catch the perpetrators, whoever they are," he vowed. People responsible for the damage remains unknown. He added that the explosion did not cause any injuries.
In past several months, several European nations have reported incursions into their airspace with many accusing Russia as responsible. The Kremlin has denied involvement.
Earlier this month, the European Commission adopted stringent rules on issuing visas to Russian nationals over safety risks related to Russia’s war on Ukraine.
“We now face unprecedented drone disruptions and sabotage on our soil. We have a duty to protect our citizens," Kaja Kallas, the EU’s foreign policy chief said in a statement.
CNN quoted Poland’s Deputy Interior Minister Maciej Duszczyk as saying in an interview to Polsat News on Sunday that his country has been confronted with varying acts of sabotage for some time.
In 2024, a fire had destroyed a shopping centre in Warsaw. Polish authorities said this was caused by arson ordered by Russian intelligence services though Kremlin denied the allegations.
Speaking on the latest attack, Duszczyk said “someone must have damaged" the train track while warning against immediately assigning the blame to Russia.
“Russia is not so powerful that every arson, every situation of this type, is provoked by Russia. However, this cannot be ruled out or underestimated in any way," he said.
