Zelenskyy meets UK PM Starmer at Downing Street.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer on Saturday following his explosive Oval Office showdown with Donald Trump.
Zelenskyy arrived at London Stansted Airport on Saturday after a shouting match with the US President in Washington on Friday. Ukraine’s President left the White House after the meeting collapsed when JD Vance accused him of having “disrespected" the US.
Supporters cheered as Zelenskyy’s convoy swept into Downing Street, where he was embraced by Starmer. Both the leaders posed for photographs before heading inside the UK Prime Minister’s home.
Starmer and Zelenskyy’s meeting took place before a wider summit of European leaders on Sunday, which Downing Street said would focus on shoring up support for “securing a just and enduring peace" in Ukraine.
Starmer Assures Britain’s “Full Support" To Ukraine
During the meeting, Starmer told Volodymyr Zelenskyy that Ukraine has Britain’s “full backing". The statement seemed relevant amid the ongoing uncertainty over US support following yesterday’s showdown.
“You have full backing across the United Kingdom and we have full backing for Ukraine for as long as it takes," Keir said,.
The Prime Minister went on to say that the cheers of support from the crowds outside Downing street show the people of Britain’s “unwavering determination" to stand with Ukraine and support its sovereignty.
Zelenskyy Expresses Gratitude
Zelenskyy further praised Britain’s support from the very beginning and expressed optimism about a summit with European leaders to be held tomorrow in London.
“Very happy in the UK," the Ukranian President said, adding, “We’re happy and count on your support."
