Alaska Talks: US President Donald Trump and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin held their first face-to-face talks in five years on Friday, meeting for nearly three hours at a military base in Alaska.

Spokesperson Dmitry Peskov called the meeting “very positive,” adding that both the leaders “made exhaustive statements,” Russian news agency RIA Novosti reported.

In an interview with Fox News, Donald Trump blamed former US President Joe Biden for not being able to prevent Russia’s invasion.

“This war should have never happened. You know a lot of wars should have never happened. Stupid things go down, and wrong people are talking,” said Trump.

Russian Foreign Ministry said that Putin’s meeting with Donald Trump was held in constructive atmosphere.

Russian President Vladimir Putin described the meeting with Donald Trump as “constructive and mutually respectful”.

He also called Trump a “neighbour”.

Positive reactions have been coming from the Russian side so far since the conclusion of the Trump-Putin meeting.

Russian ambassador to US Alexander Darchiev said that the atmosphere in the talks was “positive on the whole”, Russian media reported.

Russian Defence Minister Andrey Belousov was asked by the Russian state news agency TASS how his mood was after the meeting.

He smiled and said, “Excellent”.

Donald Trump has said that he would brief Zelenskyy and other European leaders after the summit about what went during his conversation with Putin.

He has clarified that his eventual goal is to get Putin and Zelenskyy sit in the same room for talks on how to end the ongoing war.

He said that it would happen “almost immediately” if the meeting goes well.

Zelenskyy has already demanded a meeting with the US and Russia.

Ukrainian lawmaker Halyna Yanchenko hailed Donald Trump for his remark that any decision on territorial concessions should include Ukraine.

She made a reference to Trump’s answer to a reporter who asked him if territorial swaps would be discussed with Putin during a meeting.

“They’ll be discussed, but I’ve got to let Ukraine make that decision,” Trump replied to the reporter.

In an interview with CNN, Yanchenko lauded Trump for his stance.

“This is very important that he mentioned this. When we are talking about trading the lands, we actually are talking about trading people,” she said.

Russian Defence Minister Andrew Belousov will join the talks in Anchorage “in an expanded format”, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said, BBC reported.

As of now, the delegations are negotiating in a three-on-three format — away from the one-on-one format earlier announced by Trump.

President Putin is currently joined by his Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and foreign policy adviser Yuri Ushakov, while President Trump has Secretary of State Marco Rubio and special envoy Steve Witkoff by his side.

Zelenskyy has reiterated that Ukraine must be included in talks to ensure “effective decisions” are made on ending the conflict.

His remarks came as Trump and Putin are holding a meeting in Alaska, where the Ukrainian side has not been invited.

“Security guarantees are needed. Lasting peace is needed,” he wrote on X. “Everyone knows the key objectives. I want to thank everyone who is helping to achieve real results.”

The White House shared a picture of Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin at a meeting venue in Alaska and captioned the post “Pursuing Peace”.

The talks between Trump and Putin will not be limited to Ukraine and economic matters, according to top Russian negotiator Kirill Dmitriev.

The two leaders will also discuss topics of global strategic security, a source told Russian state news outlet TASS.

At the bilateral lunch, Rubio, Witkoff, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth, and chief of staff Susie Wiles will also be present from the US side.

Ukraine is ready to work as productively as possible to bring the war to an end, and we count on a strong position from America. Everything will depend on this – the Russians factor in American strength. Make no mistake – strength,” he posted on X.
