UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed will visit India from August 26 to 28 to discuss the world body's cooperation with New Delhi and the country's role in advancing sustainable development.

During the visit, Mohammed will meet senior government officials in New Delhi and students at the Indian Institute of Technology. Her India stop will come on her way back to New York after visits to China and Mongolia as part of a wider UN engagement on artificial intelligence, human development and land restoration.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres' spokesman Stphane Dujarric said at the daily press briefing on Wednesday that Mohammed will meet senior government officials in New Delhi 'to discuss UN-India cooperation and India's engagement in advancing sustainable development'. He added that in India, she will also meet students at the Indian Institute of Technology to 'exchange on the opportunities and challenges to leverage digital innovation in support of the Sustainable Development Goals'.

Before arriving in India, Mohammed will be in China this week, where she will convene the third dialogue on Artificial Intelligence and Human Development on Thursday and Friday. Dujarric said the meeting is part of a global series of high-level dialogues bringing together leading thinkers from across the country, the region and the world to 'examine how one of humanity's most transformative technologies is shaping human progress'.

On August 23, Mohammed will travel to Ulaanbaatar in Mongolia on behalf of the Secretary-General to attend the 17th session of the Conference of the Parties of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification, or UNCCD COP17. During the visit, Dujarric said, she will stress the need to accelerate land restoration, strengthen resilience and advance sustainable development in the face of growing challenges from desertification, land degradation and drought.

Mohammed is scheduled to return to New York on August 28. She had earlier visited India in July 2023, her first trip to the country since her reappointment as UN deputy secretary-general for a second five-year term in January 2022. During that visit, she met External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and travelled to Bengaluru, where she interacted with experts from leading information and technology research institutions and industry representatives on India's digital technology achievements and how they could be replicated in the Global South to address development challenges.

In sum, Mohammed's India visit later this month will focus on UN-India cooperation, sustainable development and digital innovation, and will form part of a broader UN tour covering artificial intelligence talks in China and a desertification conference in Mongolia.
