NYC Mayoral Election: Former Governor Andrew Cuomo conceded defeat in the New York City Democratic mayoral primary to Zohran Mamdani, as the 33-year-old state Assembly member maintained a significant lead on Tuesday night.

Cuomo’s concession came even as the final outcome remains pending, with the winner set to be determined through a ranked-choice voting process after neither candidate secured an outright majority.

Zohran Mamdani, a 33-year-old democratic socialist and member of the New York State Assembly, began to take a decisive lead with more than 80% of ballots counted in the Democratic mayoral primary, widening the gap over former Governor Andrew Cuomo.

In his speech to supporters, Cuomo conceded, saying, “Mamdani won," and added, “We are going to take a look and make some decisions. Tonight is his night."

If elected, Mamdani would make history as New York City’s first Muslim and Indian American mayor. His rise signals a potential generational and ideological shift within the Democratic Party. Cuomo, once a dominant figure in New York politics, has been attempting a political comeback following his 2021 resignation amid a sexual harassment scandal. Notably, incumbent Mayor Eric Adams skipped the primary, choosing instead to run as an independent.

The outcome of this race could reflect broader sentiments within the Democratic base about the type of leadership they seek during President Donald Trump’s second term. Despite his damaged reputation, the 67-year-old Cuomo had been a frontrunner for much of the campaign, leveraging his name recognition, extensive political network, and formidable fundraising machinery in an attempt to regain public office.
