Vedanta Group Chairman Anil Agarwal, on Sunday, March 29, invoked the Bhagavad Gita while speaking about the group’s unsuccessful bid for Jaiprakash Associates Ltd, in a deeply personal and philosophical message, raising questions around fairness and commitment in the process.

Sharing that he had been reading the Bhagavad Gita, Agarwal quoted its chapter 15: “Have courage. Stay humble. Do your duty without attachment.” He said the message resonated deeply with the recent developments around the bid.

Accompanying his post was a screenshot of a news headline that read “Vedanta acquires Jaiprakash Associates in ₹17,000 crore bid”, even as the eventual outcome went against the group.

This morning, I was reading Chapter 15 of the Bhagavad Gita. One thought stayed with me. “Have courage. Stay humble. Do your duty without attachment.” Life tested this.

Agarwal recounted his past interactions with Jaypee Group founder Jaiprakash Gaur, describing how Gaur had personally reached out to him years ago with the hope that what he had built would be carried forward “in safe hands.”

“His only wish was simple… that what he had built should go into safe hands and be taken forward with the right intent,” Agarwal said, adding that the memory returned to him during the insolvency bidding process.

He noted that Vedanta had participated in the auction conducted under the insolvency framework and was “declared the highest bidder publicly,” but claimed the decision was later changed.

“It was a transparent process… But life is never so simple. After some days, the decision was changed,” he said, without detailing specifics.

Striking a philosophical tone, Agarwal said Vedanta holds no attachment to the asset. “If it comes, it is God’s grace. If it goes, that is also His wish,” he wrote, but stressed that “when something is promised in dharma, it should not be taken back.”

The remarks come as Vedanta challenges the approval of Adani Enterprises Ltd’s bid for Jaiprakash Associates before the appellate insolvency tribunal.

Ending on a reflective note, Agarwal said the group would continue to pursue the matter through the right channels, guided by the Gita’s principle of action without attachment: “We will do our duty… Rest, I leave to God.”
