Dr Salman Ahmad, a musician and a close aide of former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan, spoke exclusively with CNN-News18 from Washington on Wednesday. He expressed strong opposition to Pakistan army chief General Syed Asim Munir Ahmed Shah’s visit to Washington DC, labelling him “a psychopath and war criminal". Ahmad announced plans to protest in front of the White House against Munir’s visit.
Asim Munir is scheduled to visit Washington DC for the US Army Day celebrations on June 14, top intelligence sources have told CNN-News18. He will join other military leaders to commemorate the US Army’s 250th anniversary. According to sources at the Pakistani embassy in Washington DC, Munir is expected to arrive on June 12.
CNN-News18 had earlier reported that Imran Khan’s party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), plans to hold protests against Asim Munir’s visit to Washington.
Salman Ahmad criticised the Pakistan army, stating that while it has never won a war, it has consistently influenced election outcomes. According to Ahmad, families in Pakistan and Pakistani expatriates have been targeted by the ISI and Asim Munir for advocating the rule of law, an independent judiciary, and the release of Imran Khan, whose arrest Ahmad deems unlawful.
Ahmad also accused the ISI and Asim Munir of being responsible for the deaths of thousands of workers and journalists. During his visit to the US, Munir is meeting with top officials, including Tulsi Gabbard and Marco Rubio. Ahmad stated that there is evidence Munir massacred a large number of Pakistanis and subsequently attacked Afghanistan in the same month, resulting in the deaths of innocent children and women.
Ahmad further claimed that Munir is fomenting unrest within Pakistan for personal gain.
