An asteroid measuring approximately 70 cm in diameter is on a collision course with Earth and will enter Earth’s atmosphere over northern Siberia this evening.
The asteroid will collide with Earth around 9:45 pm (IST), however, there could be a variation of five minutes.
Experts said that the event will be harmless and stargazers will be treated to a spectacular fireball and should not anticipate any significant damage.
The recently detected asteroid, still unnamed, is being closely monitored as part of an increasing number of near-Earth objects. The asteroid was identified just before its anticipated entry into Earth’s atmosphere.
The asteroid approaching Earth is expected to burn up upon entering the atmosphere and create a visible flash from the ground. These smaller asteroids typically disintegrate without causing harm, as their size prevents them from surviving the intense heat during entry.
Similar events in the past have allowed for scientific observation and public awareness. In 2013, a meteor exploded over Chelyabinsk, Russia, causing injuries and damage, while also highlighting the need for planetary defense.
Space agencies like NASA and the European Space Agency (ESA) are enhancing their ability to detect and track near-Earth objects. These efforts are critical for assessing potential threats and developing strategies for larger asteroids that could pose a risk.
Skywatchers in northern Siberia may be able to see the asteroid’s entry today. While the asteroid’s impact poses no threat, it underscores the dynamic nature of the solar system and the importance of monitoring objects that come close to Earth.
