India has pushed for “purposeful dialogue and diplomacy" to bring a ‘two-state solution’ for the ongoing Israel-Palestine war which has led to an unprecedented humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip, including the risk of a famine.

Ambassador Parvathaneni Harish, India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, while speaking at the UN’s High-Level Conference on “The Peaceful Settlement of the Question of Palestine and the Implementation of The Two-State Solution" said: “Our efforts must now focus on how to bring about a two-state solution through purposeful dialogue and diplomacy, and bringing the parties to the conflict to engage directly with each other."

Noting that the human suffering in Gaza “continues unabated", Harish said: “Tens of thousands have been killed, and many more injured. Several medical facilities have been damaged or destroyed. Children have been deprived of schooling for more than 20 months. Humanitarian aid needs to flow without impediments."

“Humanitarian assistance is vital in sustaining life and must remain outside the realm of politics or conflict," he said, adding that Palestinians in Gaza must have access to food, fuel and other basic necessities “without hindrance".

Highlighting the importance of an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, the ambassador said: “India has also been clear on the measures that must be undertaken in the short-term—an immediate ceasefire, sustained and unimpeded humanitarian assistance, release of all hostages, and the path of dialogue and diplomacy. There are no alternatives to these measures."

He added: “Lasting solutions are required to achieve this. Certain action points are emerging from the Conference. Following up on them is the key. Let us not be content with paper solutions but strive to achieve practical solutions that actually make a tangible difference in the daily lives of our Palestinian brothers and sisters. India expresses its complete readiness to contribute to this noble endeavour."

India had also voted in favour of a UNGA resolution last year that announced an international summit in June 2025 to discuss the ‘two state’ formula.

On the Gaza issue, India has skillfully balanced its growing and strategic relationship with Israel while maintaining its traditional support for the Palestinian cause, including the two-state solution. While firmly upholding Israel’s right to defend itself against Hamas attacks, the Indian government has also called on Israel to respect international law and avoid harming civilians.

“India shares historic and strong ties with our Palestinian brothers and sisters. We have always stood by them and our commitment towards the Palestinian cause is unwavering," said Harish earlier.

The Ministry of External Affairs also reaffirmed India’s position in Parliament on Friday, stating that India has consistently advocated for a negotiated two-state solution, aimed at establishing a sovereign, independent, and viable State of Palestine within secure and internationally recognised borders, coexisting peacefully alongside Israel.
