A day after most exit polls predicted victory for the BJP-led Mahayuti in Maharashtra assembly election, two other pollsters on Thursday also predicted a sweep for the ruling alliance in the western state.
Axis My India gave a whopping 178 to 200 seats to the Mahayuti with 48 per cent vote share and 82 to 102 to the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) with 37 per cent votes. It predicted six to 12 seats for others with 12 per cent vote share. It did not give a single seat to the Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi (VBA), suggesting a 3 per cent vote share for the party headed by Prakash Ambedkar.
Today’s Chanakya, meanwhile, suggested that the Mahayuti will win at least 175 seats and the MVA could get 100 with approximately 13 seats to others.
Axis My India predicted big gains for the Mahayuti in the Marathwada and North Maharashtra regions. The alliance had registered a poor performance in Marathwada and Vidarbha belts during the recently held Lok Sabha polls.
In the Marathwada region, where 46 seats are up for grabs, the pollster predicted 30 seats for Mahayuti with 45 per cent vote share, 15 for the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) with 38 per cent votes, one for ‘Others’ category (12 per cent vote share) and none for the Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi (VBA) with 5 per cent votes.
In the all-important Mumbai region with 36 seats, Axis My India predicted 22 seats for Mahayuti, 14 for the MVA, and none for others. It, however, predicted that the vote share difference between the two main alliances will be slim with 45 per cent to the current regime and 43 per cent for the opposition.
In the Konkan and Thane region, where it is a contest for 39 seats, the exit poll predicted 24 seats for Mahayuti with a whopping 50 per cent vote share, 13 seats for MVA with 33 per cent votes, two seats to ‘Others’ (15 per cent vote share) and none to the VBA (2 per cent vote share).
While it predicted a massive win for the Mahayuti in Maharashtra, Axis My India was the only pollster to predict victory for the Congress-JMM alliance in Jharkhand with 49 to 59 seats out of 81 as against only 17 to 27 seats for the BJP-led Democratic Alliance (NDA) and three seats for others.
WHAT DID THE OTHER POLLSTERS SAY?
While the Matrize exit poll conducted in a tie-up with several news organisations predicted 150 to 170 seats for the BJP and allies in Maharashtra with a 48 per cent vote share, it gave the Congress and other allies only 110 to 130 seats with a vote share of 42 per cent. The poll gave others eight to 10 seats, with a vote share of 10 per cent.
The exit poll conducted by People’s Pulse gave NDA’s Mahayuti a whopping 175 to 195 seats while giving only 85 to 112 seats to MVA and seven to 12 to others in Maharashtra. The JVC-TimesNow exit poll gave the BJP-led coalition a total of 159 seats and MVA only 116 seats, with 13 to others.
Another exit poll by P-MARQ in Maharashtra gave the NDA a total of 137 to 157 seats and the INDIA bloc’s MVA 126 to 146 seats while giving two to eight seats to others. On the other hand, the poll conducted by Electoral Edge predicted MVA to win 150 seats while giving 121 seats to BJP-led Mahayuti and 20 seats to others in Maharashtra.
Exit polls by Poll Diary predicted the NDA winning 122 to 186 seats and the MVA 69 to 121 while forecasting 12 to 29 seats for others in Maharashtra. Chanakya Strategies, another pollster, predicted 152 to 160 seats for Mahayuti and 130 to 138 seats for MVA while giving six to eight seats for others in Maharashtra.
Lokshahi Rudra has predicted a close fight between Mahayuti and MVA in Maharashtra and gave them 128 to 142 seats and 125 to 140, respectively. It gave others 18 to 23 seats. The exit poll by Lokpoll gave Mahayuti 115 to 128 seats, with 37 to 40 per cent vote share, and predicted victory for MVA in 151 to 162 seats, giving them 43 to 46 per cent vote share. It gave others five to 14 seats with a vote share of 16 to 19 per cent.
A survey conducted by Delhi University’s Centre for Global Studies (CGS) has predicted electoral victories for the Mahayuti alliance in Maharashtra and the NDA in Jharkhand.
Exit polls were out soon after the close of polling in Maharashtra and the second phase of voting in Jharkhand, predicting victory of the Mahayuti government in Maharashtra and the NDA in Jharkhand.
In the 288-member Maharashtra legislative assembly, 145 is the majority mark. The BJP-Shiv Sena-NCP alliance is in power in the state. Counting of votes will take place on November 23 for the assembly elections and bypolls to 15 seats in Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Kerala and Uttarakhand.
The Election Commission has previously criticised the exit polls on the manner in which they have been conducted and, in several past elections, they have been proved way off the mark.
