Bangladesh’s Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus conveyed his “profound grief and deep condolences" over the demise of former Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, calling him a “close friend".
“In his messages, the Hon’ble Chief Adviser described Dr. Manmohan Singh, as a person of great humility, a visionary leader, a statesman, who was known for his unwavering commitment to ensuring the welfare of the people of India. The Hon’ble Chief Adviser said that the late Prime Minister will be remembered for his contributions to India’s economic transformation," read a statement from Bangladesh’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Yunus said Singh’s leadership not only shaped the future of India but also contributed to the strengthening of friendship and mutually beneficial cooperation between Bangladesh and India.

He also highlighted the former PM’s vision and firm commitment to regional peace, prosperity and role in advancing South Asian cooperation. “He urged the South Asian countries to work together to build on the rich legacy of his ideas and work as a tribute to Dr Manmohan Singh," the statement further read.
The Chief Adviser also recalled a warm congratulatory message he received from Singh after winning the Nobel Peace Prize in October 2006. He also highlighted several meetings with the leader, including when Yunus was invited to address the Prof. Hiren Mukerjee Annual Parliamentary Lecture attended by members of both parliamentary houses.
“The Hon’ble Chief Adviser extended, on behalf of the Government and people of Bangladesh, his heartfelt condolences to the family of Dr Manmohan Singh, the Government, and the people of India," the ministry wrote.
Former PM Manmohan Singh, widely known as the architect of economic reforms in India, passed away at the age of 92 at AIIMS Delhi on Thursday. His demise sparked an outpouring of grief and condolences from people from all walks of life.
President Droupadi Murmu, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Congress MPs Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi along with several CMs and politicians from all parties paid tribute to the late leader at his residence in Delhi.
As the finance minister in the PV Narasimha Rao-led government from 1991-1996, Singh spearheaded transformative economic reforms, steering India away from socialist-era policies toward a liberalised economy. Manmohan Singh is celebrated as a towering icon in Indian politics and economics.
His impressive scholarly acumen was succeeded by his prime ministership, becoming the first Sikh PM who is among the longest-serving PMs in Indian history. He has left behind a legacy of transforming India through some of the greatest reforms in India’s history.
