A seemingly aggressive gesture caught on camera during French President Emmanuel Macron and his wife Brigitte’s arrival in Vietnam sparked rumors of discord within their relationship. However, the French leader swiftly dismissed the speculation, insisting that the interaction was merely playful and urging “everyone needs to calm down."
“Horsing Around" Or Something More?
The widely circulated video appeared to show Brigitte Macron making a “shoving" motion towards her husband’s face. Dismissing the incident as overblown, Emmanuel Macron stated, “We are horsing around and, really, joking with my wife." His office echoed this sentiment, calling it “a moment of closeness" and “complicity" between the couple before the official start of their trip, lamenting it only served to “give ammunition to the conspiracy theorists."
Emmanuel Macron And Brigitte’s Unconventional Romance
The couple’s unconventional relationship began when Brigitte was Emmanuel Macron’s drama teacher at La Providence, a private school in Amiens, in 1993. At the time, Emmanuel Macron was 15 and Brigitte, then married with three children, was 40.
Their connection deepened when the teenage Emmanuel Macron asked his teacher to help him rewrite sections of a play. “Little by little, I was won over by his intelligence," Brigitte later admitted. Despite rumors circulating about their romance, Brigitte encouraged a 17-year-old Emmanuel Macron to complete his schooling in Paris. Before leaving, Emmanuel Macron famously vowed, “Whatever you do, I will marry you!"
True to his word, Emmanuel Macron married Brigitte in 2007 when he was 29 and she was 54, in the upscale town of Le Touquet. The ceremony was attended by Brigitte’s three children and Emmanuel Macron’s parents. Addressing his new family and guests at the time, Emmanuel Macron toasted, “Each and every one of you is a witness to these last 13 years… You have accepted us. You have made us what we are today… I want to thank you for loving us the way we are, and I want to thank Brigitte’s children because this has not been easy for them."
Brigitte once told Elle France, “There are times in your life where you need to make vital choices. Of course, we have breakfast together, me and my wrinkles, him with his youth, but it’s like that."
Emmanuel Macron’s Political Rise
After their marriage, Brigitte left her teaching career to support Emmanuel Macron’s political ambitions, becoming his main consultant when he served as finance minister in 2014. In 2017, at just 39, Emmanuel Macron became France’s youngest-ever president.
