US President Donald Trump’s son, Don Jr, questioned former first lady Jill Biden over the delayed diagnosis of former US president and her husband Joe Biden’s prostate cancer.
Two doctors also raised concerns if Americans were kept in the dark and if Biden had been suffering from cancer during his tenure. Biden opted out of the race for the White House, leading Kamala Harris to replace him, who then lost to Donald Trump in the November 2024 elections.
His office office Sunday that he was diagnosed with an “aggressive" form of prostate cancer, with “metastasis to the bone," adding that he was reviewing his treatment options.
While there is no legal obligation for a US president to disclose serious health conditions, there is a long-standing expectation of transparency rooted in public trust, national security and the operational demands of the presidency.
Concealing an aggressive cancer diagnosis, especially one that has spread to the bone, can raise grave ethical and constitutional concerns about the president’s fitness to govern.
Don Jr’s social media post highlighted that.
“What I want to know is how did Dr. Jill Biden miss stage five metastatic cancer or is this yet another coverup???" US’ First Son wrote on Truth Social, a platform his father owns.
“It is highly likely he was carrying a diagnosis of prostate cancer throughout his White House tenure and the American people were uninformed," Dr Steven Quay was quoted as saying while speaking to the New York Post. He further added that Biden’s type of cancer is the easiest to diagnose when it first starts and progresses.
“Gleason grade 9 would have had an elevated PSA level for some time before this diagnosis. And he must have had a PSA test numerous times before. This is odd," Quay said, wishing the veteran Democrat a rapid recovery.
Historically, some presidents have hidden their illnesses from the public, leading to controversy in hindsight.
Franklin D. Roosevelt kept the full extent of his heart disease secret during World War II. John F. Kennedy suffered from Addison’s disease and chronic back pain, conditions hidden throughout his presidency.
Ronald Reagan’s staff initially downplayed the severity of his injuries after the 1981 assassination attempt and later faced questions over his cognitive health during his second term.
Such non-disclosures can also complicate the use of the 25th Amendment, which outlines the process to transfer power in case of a president’s incapacity. In situations involving nuclear command authority and military decisions, even brief lapses in leadership clarity can have serious consequences.
