Bihar, historically one of India’s most impoverished and underdeveloped states, is witnessing a notable rise in wealthy legislators despite ongoing issues such as poverty, unemployment and migration dominating election debates.

194 Millionaire MLAs In 2020 Bihar Elections

Data from the Election Commission reveals that in the 2020 assembly elections, a remarkable 194 out of 243 winning candidates (approximately 81%) were millionaires. This marks a significant increase from 2015, when 67% of elected MLAs were millionaires, representing a 14% rise over the five-year period.

The average assets of these successful candidates in 2020 were estimated at Rs 4.32 crore, with 61 MLAs possessing assets exceeding Rs 5 crore. This trend underscores the growing financial wealth among Bihar’s legislators.

Anant Kumar Singh: Among the wealthiest MLAs, Anant Kumar Singh, elected from Mokama on a Rashtriya Janata Dal ticket, topped the list with assets worth Rs 68.56 crore. However, he was sentenced to 10 years in prison under the Arms Act by the Patna MP-MLA Court on June 21, 2022, resulting in the loss of his MLA status.
