The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) lashed out at the Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, for defaming India on foreign soil, after his controversial remarks in Colombia, where the Congress leader insisted that democracy was at risk in India.
Speaking at a press conference, BJP national spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia said, “We all know how India has grown stronger under the leadership of PM Narendra Modi. The Indian armed forces were given full freedom and in Operation Sindoor, we saw how a strong message was sent."
“We have also seen that India’s Leader of the Opposition has been on foreign soil for four days. His only job is to defame India, which is on the path of progress towards development," he added.

He also criticised the Congress Party over former Home Minister P Chidambaram’s stunning claim that international pressure allegedly stopped the UPA government from retaliating against Pakistan after the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks.
“This revelation is worrying, it scares us that a government which was given the constitutional responsibility to protect the sovereignty of India, that government became a puppet in the hands of foreign powers," he said.
He also implied that the Manmohan Singh government was remotely controlled by Sonia Gandhi, which directly contradicted the Indian Constitution.
Congress Reacts To BJP’s Charge
Congress leader KC Venugopal accused the BJP of blaming the Congress for its own failures and bringing up international shame. “Whether it is said in Colombia or Kanpur, the reality remains the same – India’s government has failed to harness the vast potential of our economy and is undoing our demographic dividend," he said.
“Our democratic system being hijacked is a matter that has brought us disrepute across the world, courtesy the BJP itself. It is a stale, hackneyed and misdirected tactic by the BJP ecosystem to attack Rahul ji for speaking plainly. It would serve them better if they paid close attention to his statements and acted to rectify the glaring flaws he has been highlighting since 2014," he added.

Venugopal also said Rahul Gandhi was “exposing the misrule, corruption and undemocratic character of the BJP" and insulting India and its people.
Rahul Gandhi’s Remarks
While speaking at Colombia’s EIA University, Rahul Gandhi targeted the Narendra Modi-led government at the Centre by saying that the “attack on democracy in India" is the “single biggest risk" in the country.
“The other risk is the rift between different parts of the country. Some 16-17 different languages and different religions. Allowing these different traditions to thrive, giving them space to express themselves, is very important for India. We cannot do what China does: suppress people and run an authoritarian system. Our design will not accept that," he said.
The BJP, however, strongly responded to the Congress MP’s comments and accused him of badmouthing India on foreign soil. Calling him a “Leader of Propaganda", the party said he “goes abroad and attacks Indian democracy".
