In life, change is the only constant, and US President Donald Trump is no exception. Known for his characteristic bright blonde hair, Trump was seen sporting a darker brown shade in New Jersey last weekend as he headed to his golf club in Bedminster. The unexpected change of hair colour has sparked a flurry of reactions on social media, with at least one person declaring it was "not on my 2026 bingo card."
People who have seen Trump don his blonde hair for years have been left baffled and guessing.
Trump is known for many things, including his distinctive coiffure, which he has maintained for years. The now 80-year-old US President has also long-faced allegations that he wore a wig. He has had to fend them off over the years.
Against that backdrop, images of Trump waving to reporters on the tarmac at Morristown, New Jersey, on Friday, dressed in a navy suit and yellow tie, drew plenty of amused and confused reactions on social media platforms.
''Trump becoming a brunette was definitely not on my 2026 bingo card," a person wrote on X. ''Seems brown is the new blonde," he added, referring to the HBO TV series, Orange is the New Black.
Many, accustomed to seeing the US President's blonde hair were, of course, quite surprised. ''Trump is now a brunette!'', wrote one person. ''Trump really woke up this morning and said: 'Make America Brunette Again'," wrote another person, referencing Trump's Make America Great Again slogan and movement, which helped the Republican to reach the White House in 2017.
''Something needs to be done about his hair under the 25th Amendment'', George Conway, a lawyer and Trump critic, wrote on X. For context, The 25th Amendment to the US Constitution, referenced by Conway, provides a process for transferring presidential power when a president is unable to perform the duties of the office, including provisions for declaring a president unable to serve.
Another person suggested that Trump looked like he was "melting", a reference to former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani, whose freshly dyed hair famously began leaching black colour during a press conference back in 2020.
Some suggested that the US President was trying to look like famous Hollywood personalities, drawing comparisons to Robert Redford (the late actor known for his reddish copper-colored hair) and Pierce Brosnan (who possessed a jet-black brunette hairstyle during his James Bond days).
Others were far less generous with their comparisons. Paul Rudnick, a novelist and playwright, wrote on X, ''Trump told his stylist, 'I want to look like serial killer Rex Heuermann,'' referring to the New Yorker who admitted to killing eight women in a case known as the Gilgo Beach murders.
There were, of course, your usual share of trolls. ''A new hair colo[u]r doesn't change the fact that he looks like a clown'', said a person. Others joked that Trump had "run out of Cheeto dust blond hair dye."
This comes amid renewed accusations that Donald Trump's hair was falling victim to the vagaries of old age. After the President was spotted with much brighter and thicker hair than usual at a Las Vegas event in August, many suggested that Trump has been forced to switch to a wig.
He has, of course, denied all accusations defending his once-blonde, now-brunette follicles. At a 2015 election campaign rally, he said, ''I don't wear a toupee, it's my hair, I swear,'' before adding, ''This is getting crazy,'' while pulling on his hair.
And just two days before his appearance in a new brunette look, Trump insisted he didn't wear a wig. Speaking at a White House dinner on Wednesday, September 2, he recalled a windy day on the 2024 campaign trail in Ohio.
''I went up to the speaker, and it was blowing so hard,'' Trump said. ''I don’t wear a wig. But that night, they found out I didn't wear a wig because if you did, it was not going to be on your head very long," Trump was quoted as saying by Fox News.
To sum up, it's yet unknown why Trump has switched from blonde to brunette. Until then, it's all jokes, memes and intrigue. What remains to be seen is how long he will keep the new style.
