Brigadier General Ahmad Vahidi has been appointed the new Commander-in-Chief of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, Daily Iran News reported.
The development comes as Mohammad Pakpour, the IRGC’s Commander-in-Chief, was killed in the US-Israeli strikes. Meanwhile, Tehran has vowed a major retaliation against the strikes that have shaken the nation’s political and military landscape.
Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, was also killed in the attack. Hours after US President Donald Trump claimed Khamenei was dead, Iranian state media confirmed the killing.
The Iranian government, meanwhile, announced 40 days of mourning following the killing of Khamenei.
WHO IS AHMAD VAHIDI?
Ahmad Vahidi’s appointment comes amid soaring tensions in the Middle East following a series of joint strikes launched by the US and Israel against Tehran Saturday morning.
A veteran military officer, Vahid Shahcheraghi, alias Ahmad Vahidi, was appointed the deputy commander-in-chief of the IRGC in December 2025. He previously served as the Minister of Defence and the Minister of Interior.
A founding member of the IRGC, Vahidi previously commanded the Quds Force — the external operations arm that oversees Iran’s regional military networks.
Vahidi has played a crucial role in designing Iran’s asymmetric warfare doctrine and regional alliances.
His appointment as the Commander-in-Chief of the IRGC places him at the centre of Tehran’s military retaliation for the strikes.
Although Iranian authorities have not yet issued an official statement publicly outlining the appointment, the purported move follows significant upheaval within Iran’s military and political structure.
