The Supreme Court Of Canada on Thursday granted bail to the four Indians accused in the murder case of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. The case will now be heard in the Canadian court on February 11.

According to the details, the release order was issued due to lack of evidence, after the proceedings were stayed in a lower court.

Sources told CNN-News18 that the Canadian Police could not produce substantial evidence against the accused.

The four Indians, identified as Karan Brar, Amandeep Singh, Kamalpreet Singh, and Karanpreet Singh, were chargesheeted in November 2024. They had submitted an appeal for bail to the Canadian Supreme Court, which was later accepted.

According to the court documents, three of the accused had appeared for the hearing through video conferencing, while one had appeared through the counsel.

Commenting on the matter, an official from the British Colombia Prosecution Service said, “Some pre-trial motions will be held before the actual trial, but we cannot provide an estimate yet regarding the duration of the pre-trial period."

Top sources with the Indian government, meanwhile, termed this an “embarrassing situation for the Canadian Police".

They also said that the Canadian Police were clueless about the accused and hence were not appearing in the court for the hearing.

“They just picked some local youth and on the basis of that, Trudeau went overboard and spoke against India. He also accused an Indian government official, which we kept on denying, and now their own police are certifying that," the sources said.

India’s ties with Canada have seen sharp deterioration with India repeatedly expressing its deep concern about extremism and the culture of violence and anti-India activities in Canada and has asked Canadian authorities to take action against these activities.

Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau had claimed that he has “credible allegations" of India’s hand in the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Canada last year.

India has denied all the allegations, calling them “absurd" and “motivated" and has accused Canada of giving space to extremist and anti-India elements in their country.

Earlier, India recalled six diplomats from Canada after they were declared “persons of interest" by the Canadian government in the investigation into the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar.

Nijjar was killed outside the Gurdwara in Surrey, British Columbia, on June 18 last year.
