After winning the high-stakes Liberal party’s leadership race to be the next prime minister of Canada, Mark Carney strongly stated his position on the US, declaring that he would never allow Ottawa to be “part of America in any way."

The 59-year-old political outsider, who has served as the governor of the Bank of Canada and Bank of England, won the leadership race for Canada’s Liberal Party with 86 per cent votes, defeating former Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland.

Reacting to US President Donald Trump’s repeated wish to make Canada the 51st state of the United States, Carney said, “America is not Canada. Canada will never ever be part of America in any way, shape or form."

Mark Carney, who has been vocal in his criticism of President Trump, reinforced his firm stance against the US during his victory speech.

Noting how badly Americans want the Canadian resources, water, land and the country, Carney said, “If they succeeded, they would destroy our way of life."

Carney On Trump’s Tariff Threat

Regarding Trump’s tariff threats, Carney stated that Canada’s retaliatory measures would remain in effect until the U.S. makes a credible commitment to free and fair trade.

Following Trump’s decision to impose a 25 per cent tariff on all Canadian goods, excluding the automobile and energy sectors, Canada, under outgoing Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, has maintained a retaliatory stance.

He affirmed that Canada “cannot and will not let him (Trump) succeed". “We are Canada strong," Carney reiterated.

He also took a jab at his Conservative opponents, stating that while Canadians may not seek political battles, they are always prepared “when someone else drops the gloves."

He further reiterated Canada’s commitment to challenging American tariffs, emphasising the need to support those most affected by the impositions while strengthening the country internally.

Describing America as a country “we can no longer trust" as it has brought dark days on Canada, he said, “We are getting over the shock but let us never forget the lessons, we have to look after ourselves and to look out for each other. We need to pull together in the tough days ahead."
