A 39-year-old Canadian man died after being swept into the ocean while trying to save his 5-year-old daughter at Garrapata State Beach in Big Sur, California, on Friday. The child remains missing.
According to the New York Post, the tragedy unfolded along Highway 1 in Monterey County amid powerful swells, with waves reaching 15 to 20 feet. The girl was reportedly pulled into the Pacific by a large wave. Her father, identified as Yuji Hu, jumped in after her, and both were dragged further out to sea. The child’s mother also entered the water but managed to make it back to shore. Their 2-year-old remained on the beach and was unharmed.
“He jumped into the water to try to rescue his daughter, and in the process, mom also jumped into the water… it was reported that dad had a hold of his daughter at one point. Mom was able to get back to shore," said Monterey County Sheriff’s Commander Andres Rosas.
An off-duty California State Parks lifeguard and a bystander pulled Hu from the water and administered CPR. He was taken to a nearby hospital along with his wife, where he was pronounced dead. The mother was treated for mild hypothermia and later released.
State Parks officials are continuing shoreline patrols as the search for the missing girl goes on. The grieving family has requested privacy.
Authorities urged beachgoers to remain alert along the coastline, especially during periods of high surf, warning that strong waves can become life-threatening within seconds.
