Canadian PM Mark Carney Reaches Mumbai To Begin His Four-Day India Visit To Reset Bilateral Ties

The Canadian Prime Minister arrived in Mumbai to kickstart his first official to visit to India from February 27 to March 2, which are focused on restoring bilateral ties.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney reached Mumbai on his first official visit to India since assuming the top post as part of Ottawa’s efforts to restore bilateral ties with India. The Canadian Prime Minister will be in India from February 27 to March 2, 2026.

“A warm welcome to Prime Minister @MarkJCarney of Canada as he arrives in Mumbai on his first Official Visit to India. The visit marks a significant step in further strengthening India–Canada ties," said Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal.

Carney was received by Jaykumar Rawal, Minister of Protocol and Marketing. “The India–Canada partnership is anchored in shared democratic values, strong people-to-people ties, and expanding cooperation across diverse sectors," Jaiswal said.

According to an official statement from the Prime Minister’s Office, Carney’s tour, scheduled from February 26 to March 7, 2026, will include visits to India, Australia and Japan, with a focus on strengthening trade, investment and strategic partnerships in the Indo-Pacific region.

Carney’s discussions in India are expected to centre on expanding bilateral cooperation across key sectors including “trade, clean energy, technology and artificial intelligence, talent mobility, culture, and defence."

Mark Carney’s Itinerary In India

After arriving in Mumbai, the Canadian PM will participate in separate business engagements, interact with Indian and Canadian CEOs, industry and financial experts, innovators, educators, as well as Canadian Pension Funds based in India, according to a statement from the government.

He will reach Delhi on March 1. On March 2, he will hold delegation-level talks with Prime Minister Modi at Hyderabad House, where they will review the progress across various sectors. The two Prime Ministers will also attend the India–Canada CEOs Forum scheduled on 2 March.

Mark Carney’s visit to India is seen as an effort to restore diplomatic ties with India — the world’s fourth-largest economy.

The relations between India and Canada strained in 2023 after Ottawa had alleged New Delhi’s involvement in the killing of a Sikh separatist leader. In September 2023, Carney’s predecessor, Justin Trudeau, said in Parliament that there were credible allegations about India’s link to the killing of Canadian Hareep Singh Nijjar. New Delhi had denied the allegations, accusing the Trudeau government of harbouring extremists.
