China Chemical Plant Explosion: An explosion at a chemical plant in eastern China on Tuesday killed at least five people, with six more still missing.

According to state broadcaster CCTV, more than 230 firefighters have been deployed to the scene and rescue operations are ongoing. The blast occurred at Gaomi Youdao Chemical Co in Weifang city of the Shandong province.

The plant produces pesticides and chemicals used in medicine and employs more than 500 people, as per company registration records. The cause of the explosion has not yet been confirmed.

The explosion was so strong that it shattered windows at a warehouse more than 3 km from the factory. A local resident, who spoke anonymously, said his home shook from the blast and he saw a large column of black smoke rising from the site, even though he lived more than seven kilometres away.

Footage showing thick black smoke rising from the area was widely shared on social media platform X.

In response to the incident, China’s Ministry of Emergency Management quickly sent a work team along with specialists — including firefighters, medical experts, and safety officials — to assist in the rescue efforts.
