Visuals on social media showed the scary moment when passenger plane flying from Baku to Grozny crashed in Kazakhstan, with nearly 67 people on board. Kazakh authorities have said that at least 38 people are feared dead.

A Sputnik correspondent reported that the crash was caused by the collision of an airplane with a flock of birds.

According to local news agency Tengrinews, the aircraft, operated by Azerbaijan Airlines, went down near the Kazakh city of Aktau.

While the information about victims is being clarified, people on social media asked if there were any survivors, and if it was an engine failure.

According to preliminary information, there are survivors. The Azerbaijani APA news agency reported that there were 62 people and five crew members on board.

Azerbaijan Airlines, the country’s flag carrier, said the Embraer 190 had “made an emergency landing" around three kilometres from Aktau, an oil and gas hub on the eastern shore of the Caspian Sea.

The country’s emergency situations ministry said its personnel were putting out a fire at the site.

Kazakh Rescuer’s Bodycam Footage

Footage from a Kazakh firefighter’s bodycam showed the charred insides of the plane along with parts of the plane’s cabin that appeared untouched by the flames.

The footage released by Russian news media outlets showed firefighters dousing flames and recovering pieces of evidence that could indicate what caused the blast.

Survivor Captures Inside Visual

Russian news media outlets also released another footage on social media, purportedly of inside the plane. Footage from inside the plane showed a passenger with blood on their hair and head. One passenger was seen trying to exit the plane.

Azerbaijan Airlines flight J2-8243 had flown hundreds of miles off its scheduled route to crash on the opposite shore of the Caspian Sea, after what Russia’s aviation watchdog said was an emergency that may have been caused by a bird strike.
