‘China And India Should Commit To Mutual Support Rather Than Suspicion, Alienation’: Wang Yi Tells Misri

China and India should commit to mutual understanding and support rather than "mutual suspicion", and "alienation", Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi told Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Monday told Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri that the two nations should commit to “mutual support and achievement" rather than “suspicion" and “alienation".

Yi said India and China should work in the same direction and commit to mutual understanding.

Misri is on a two-day visit to Beijing on January 26 and 27 to explore ways to strengthen ties with China.

“The two sides should seize the opportunity, meet each other halfway, explore more substantive measures, and commit to mutual understanding, mutual support, and mutual achievement, rather than mutual suspicion, mutual alienation, and mutual consumption," Yi told Misri at a meeting in Beijing, according to a readout by the Chinese Foreign Ministry.

Yi cited a meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping in Kazan last year and said that both nations have “earnestly implemented the important consensus" reached by the two leaders and have further carried out “positive interactions", leading to an acceleration in the “process of improving China-India relations".

The Chinese Foreign Minister further said that the improvement in India-China ties is “fully in line" with the fundamental interests of the two countries and is conducive to safeguarding the interests of the global south nations.

Misri said that India and China have held a series of “beneficial dialogues and communications" as per the consensus reached by PM Modi and Jinping in Kazan, and “properly managed and resolved differences and promoted the restart of practical cooperation in various fields".

“India is willing to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations with China and will fully support China’s work as the chair of the SCO," Misri said, according to the Chinese Foreign Ministry.

The Ministry of External Affairs on Thursday had said that Misri’s visit “flows from the agreement at the leadership level to discuss the next steps for India-China relations, including in the political, economic, and people-to-people domains".
