Days after Donald Trump announced an additional 100 per cent tariffs on Chinese imports, a Chinese diplomat in India warned Washington, saying his country would respond in an appropriate manner if the US did not relent.
The top Chinese official Xu Wei said on Wednesday that the US should “correct its mistakes", or China will be forced to take necessary steps to protect its rights.
Last week, Trump announced that in the event of China not taking any steps, the US will impose 100 percent tariffs on Chinese imports over and above the tariffs that they are already paying. The fresh levies will come into effect on November 1. Trump had earlier announced 155 percent tariffs on Chinese goods.
The move is another step in Trump’s “secondary tariff" approach that targets nations that indirectly support Russia’s wartime economy through energy trade.
“On the issue of the US-China tariff war, China’s stance is very clear. We don’t want any conflict. But if we are pushed, we will definitely respond," Wei said, adding, “We will fight, but our doors are open. We are repeating that cooperation benefits both countries."
He further urged the US to correct its mistakes and resolve issues. “If it does not, then China will take the necessary steps to protect its rights. It is our attitude," he added.
In reference to the current geopolitical scenario in the aftermath of Trump’s tariffs on various countries, the Chinese Consul General stressed the crucial role China’s partnership and mutual cooperation with India can play.
Speaking at an event hosted by the Chinese Consulate in Kolkata, Xu Wei highlighted the growing economic engagement between India and China.
Notably, India is another major economy in Asia that is embroiled in a bitter trade war with the US, after tariffs as steep as 50 per cent announced by Trump came into effect in August over New Delhi’s continuous purchase of Russian oil.
Speaking at an event hosted by the Chinese Consulate in Kolkata, Xu Wei highlighted the growing economic engagement between India and China.
Wei emphasised that both India and China should form a strategy to face the present challenge. “Not only China, but the US and India also need cooperation because cooperation benefits and confrontation hurts everyone".
Highlighting the improved relation between China and India, Xu announced that direct flights between India and China would resume from October 26, enhancing connectivity and people-to-people exchanges.
He revealed that the Chinese Embassy in New Delhi and Consulate offices in Kolkata and Mumbai have already issued 280,000 visas to Indian citizens this year, with projections suggesting the number will surpass 300,000 by year-end.
