A fresh political controversy erupted in Tamil Nadu after the state BJP chief, Nainar Nagendran, made a personal remark, suggesting that actor-politician Vijay should “come out of actor Trisha’s house" to gain experience, as he described the TVK Chief as a “completely inexperienced" man.
The comment triggered a political storm in the poll-bound state as several leaders called it inappropriate and unfair.
Responding to Vijay’s claim that his party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), would be the DMK’s sole challenger in the upcoming Assembly elections, BJP leader Nainar Nagendran referred to him as an inexperienced leader, saying that someone “who cannot even climb onto a rooftop is dreaming of climbing to heaven", as quoted by India Today.
“Poor man, he is completely inexperienced. First, he needs to come out of his house. Come out of Trisha’s house first, then something can happen", Nagendran said.
Later, when confronted over his remarks, the BJP leader stood by his remarks, saying, “I said it only once", as cited by the outlet.
DMK ACCUSED BJP OF DISRESPECTING WOMEN
The comments triggered fresh outrage in Tamil Nadu, as DMK leaders alleged the BJP of “disrespecting women".
“They follow Manu Dharma, which never gives respect to women. Naturally, he will speak like that. That is why the people of Tamil Nadu are against the BJP. They will ill-treat women. They are known for it," DMK spokesperson TKS Elangovan said.
Tamil Nadu Congress Committee Chief Selvaperunthagai also condemned the remarks, asking why Trisha’s name was dragged into politics.
“It’s shocking. Why is he talking about Trisha? The BJP has a lot of work in the country, yet he is talking about personal lives. It’s not fair. Personal comments should not be made in politics. One must not malign someone with such remarks," he stated.
‘COMMENTS MADE IN A GOOD SENSE’
Amid the controversy, several BJP leaders came out to defend Nagendran, asserting his comments were made in a good sense.
It is the DMK that normally maligns women. When I left the Congress party and joined the BJP, the DMK was persistent in making bad remarks about me. It is the DMK’s usual stance to target women, harass them, and speak very badly about them. Whatever comments by our state president were made in good sense and cannot be twisted. The DMK is purposely distorting them," BJP leader Vijayadharani said.
Tamil Nadu is set to undergo assembly polls anytime before May this year.
While the MK Stalin-led DMK seeks re-election, the BJP and TVK are vying for political ground in the southern state.
