China on Monday said that its boundary dispute with India is “complicated" and expressed its willingness to engage in talks on border delimitation and maintain peace along the Line of Actual Control (LAC).

The statement comes after a bilateral meeting between Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and his Chinese counterpart Dong Jun on June 26 in Qingdao, on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Defence Ministers’ conclave.

During the meeting, Singh proposed a structured roadmap to address the long-standing border issues, aimed at de-escalating tensions and revitalising existing mechanisms for demarcation.

Responding to a query on Singh’s remarks, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said, “What I can tell you is that China and India have established the Special Representatives (SRs) mechanism on the boundary question and reached the Agreement on the Political Parameters and Guiding Principles for the Settlement of the China-India Boundary Question."

She added that the two nations maintain multiple channels of diplomatic and military communication, reported news agency PTI.

“China stands ready to maintain communication with India on issues including delimitation negotiation and border management, jointly keep the border areas peaceful and tranquil, and promote cross-border exchange and cooperation," Mao stated.

On the delay in resolving the issue despite 23 rounds of SR-level talks, Mao said, “The boundary question is complicated, and it takes time to settle it." However, she noted the “positive side" is the continued communication through established mechanisms. “We hope that India will work with China in the same direction… and jointly keep the border areas peaceful and tranquil," she said.

The 23rd round of SR talks, held in December 2024 between India’s Security Advisor Ajit Doval and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, was the first since the 2020 border tensions in eastern Ladakh.

Both sides had then welcomed the progress made, including the October 2024 disengagement agreement, which allowed the resumption of patrolling and grazing in certain areas.

During his meeting with Dong, Singh stressed the importance of “good neighbourly conditions" to maximise mutual benefit and urged “action on the ground" to bridge the trust gap that followed the 2020 standoff.

He also briefed Dong on the recent Pahalgam terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir and India’s subsequent Operation Sindoor, which targeted terror infrastructure in Pakistan.

The Singh-Dong meeting comes amid ongoing efforts by New Delhi and Beijing to restore normalcy in bilateral ties and implement disengagement commitments made last year.
