Local Congress workers in Belagavi have left the party embarrassed ahead of the Congress Centenary celebration of 1924 session after placing welcome flex and banners with a distorted Indian map.

The banners and flexes which have been put up at the entrance of Belagavi city have a distorted map of India where parts of Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK) and Aksai Chin area appear to be missing from the map used in the banners and welcome boards.

The Congress Working Committee (CWC) is holding a two-day programme on December 26 and 27 in Belagavi to mark the centenary celebrations of the 1924 Indian Congress session presided over by Mahatma Gandhi. It was the only Congress session presided over by Mahatma Gandhi. The event will be attended by Congress MPs Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi.

The BJP has hit out at the Congress for distorting the India map. Former BJP MLA Sanjay Patil said this reflects the true Congress mindset. “This is why Congress didn’t support removal of Article 370," he said.

Another local BJP Corporator Shreyas Nakadi outraged that it was a mockery. “Crown of India missing, it’s no longer Mahatma Gandhi ji’s vision of India but Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi’s version," he said.

BJP leader Amit Malviya posted on X, “The Congress is the New Muslim League. It wants to break India, again."

The Congress, meanwhile, distanced itself by arguing that these are not official banners of the party. “These are not official banners of Congress, they are put out by some followers. If some well-wishers or followers put banners to welcome leaders they don’t take into confidence what the government says," argued Congress MLC Nagaraj Yadav.
