The Congress party on Tuesday released the first list of candidates for the assembly election in Assam.
The party announced names of 42 candidates, including Deputy Leader of Congress in Lok Sabha and Assam Congress chief Gaurav Gogoi who will contest the polls from Jorhat.
The elections for the 126-member assembly are expected to take place in March-April.
At present, the BJP has 64 members in the assembly, while AGP has nine, UPPL has seven, and the BPF has three. In the opposition camp, the Congress has 26 MLAs, AIUDF has 15, and CPI(M) has one. There is one Independent legislator as well.
