A social media post by Elon Musk has reignited debate over mail-in voting in the United States after the billionaire endorsed a call to significantly restrict the practice, citing concerns over fraud.
Musk reacted to a post by the account Leading Report, which claimed that he had called for mail-in voting to be abolished nationwide, except for troops stationed overseas or people with serious medical conditions. Quoting the post, Musk wrote, “Critical to avoid fraud," lending his support to the argument.
The retweet quickly gained traction, drawing millions of views and triggering sharp reactions online. Supporters echoed Musk’s concerns, arguing that mail-in ballots are vulnerable to misuse and weaken electoral integrity. Critics, however, accused him of amplifying misleading claims, noting that multiple studies and election officials have found no evidence of widespread fraud linked to mail-in voting.
Mail-in voting has been a contentious issue in US politics in recent years, particularly after its expanded use during the Covid-19 pandemic. While proponents say it improves access and voter participation, opponents argue stricter limits are needed to safeguard elections.
