Christmas Remarks Spark BJP–Congress War of Words in Telangana

A fresh political row has broken out ahead of Christmas after Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy credited Congress leader Sonia Gandhi for the celebration of Christmas in the state. His remarks have drawn sharp criticism from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which accused the Congress of extreme sycophancy and insulting the Christian community.

Reddy’s comments quickly went viral on social media, drawing mixed reactions and fuelling political debate.

BJP calls Revanth Reddy’s remarks bizarre

The BJP reacted strongly, with party spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla leading the attack on the Telangana Chief Minister. He accused Reddy of crossing “all limits of sycophancy" by linking Christmas celebrations to Sonia Gandhi.

Poonawalla mocked the statement, saying that at this rate, Reddy might next claim that even the sun rises because of Sonia Gandhi. He alleged that such remarks showed the Congress mindset of praising one family at any cost.

The BJP spokesperson also recalled Reddy’s past controversial statements, accusing him of making offensive remarks about communities and leaders. He said the Congress had a history of downplaying the contributions of national leaders like Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, B R Ambedkar and Birsa Munda, while glorifying one political family.

Poonawalla demanded an apology from Revanth Reddy, saying his remarks were humiliating and disrespectful to the Christian community.

What Revanth Reddy said?

Speaking at a Christmas celebration event on Saturday, Revanth Reddy said that people in Telangana were able to celebrate Christmas because of the “sacrifices" made by Sonia Gandhi. He claimed that December was a “miracle month" for the Congress and for Telangana, linking it to Sonia Gandhi’s birthday on December 9.

Reddy also said that Sonia Gandhi fulfilled a six-decade-old dream by creating a separate Telangana state, despite the Congress suffering political losses in Andhra Pradesh. Referring to the Telangana movement, he said many youngsters had sacrificed their lives, and that the formation of the state was delivered under Sonia Gandhi’s leadership.

With Christmas approaching, the controversy has added to growing political tensions in Telangana.
