The Manhattan US Attorney’s Office dismissed its employee, Maurene Comey, on July 16, according to sources close to the matter. Maurene, the daughter of former FBI Director James Comey, who was dismissed by Donald Trump during his first term in 2017, had been part of the prosecution team in the Jeffrey Epstein-Ghislaine Maxwell case. While the exact reason for her termination has not been confirmed, it has raised significant questions.
Maurene had served as an assistant in the US Attorney’s Office in New York since 2015, contributing to several high-profile cases, including those of Jeffrey Epstein, Ghislaine Maxwell, and Sean “Diddy" Combs.
Her firing comes amid ongoing tension between her father, James Comey, and the Trump administration, particularly US Attorney General Pam Bondi. Trump has accused James of fabricating evidence in the Epstein case while serving as FBI Director. Investigations are also examining his role in the probe that investigated links between Trump’s 2016 campaign and Russia. This political turmoil has also brought Maurene into the spotlight. Notably, right-wing figure Laura Loomer called for her dismissal as early as May.
According to a Politico report, Maurene has not provided an explanation for her firing, but sources suggest the decision likely came from someone at the Department of Justice headquarters, rather than from Jay Clayton, the interim US Attorney for the office. Maurene was informed that her dismissal was under Article II of the Constitution.
Maurene had played a significant role in the prosecution of Epstein, a convicted paedophile and sex offender, and his accomplice, Ghislaine Maxwell. Epstein was sentenced to 20 years in prison after being convicted of multiple sex crimes, though he died while serving his sentence. Maurene was also a part of the team that worked on the sex trafficking case against Sean “Diddy" Combs.
Recently, the authorities dismissed the existence of the so-called Epstein files, a controversial list allegedly containing the names of Epstein’s clients. Despite this, James has not publicly commented on the DOJ’s July 6 memo. Meanwhile, President Trump has consistently asserted that there was no client list created by Epstein, calling it a hoax supposedly fabricated by former President Barack Obama and former FBI director.
