Delhi CM Name Announcement Live Updates: The Bharatiya Janata Party may elect the next chief minister of Delhi, where it came to power after a gap of 27 years, today, February 19, around 6:30pm. Virendra Sachdeva, BJP’s Delhi unit chief, is said to have visited the iconic Ramlila Maidan on Tuesday to monitor the preparations. The legislative party leader is expected to take oath as the CM tomorrow, February 20.

The BJP formed the government in Delhi after defeating the Aam Aadmi Party in the recently held Delhi assembly election 2025, the results of which were announced on February 8. The suspense over the chief minister of Delhi, however, as the party has yet to make an announcement.

The L-G had the power to summon and prorogue the Metropolitan Council within a time interval of six months.

The 61-member Metropolitan Council had 56 elected members and five nominated members. The Council was headed by the Chairman who presided over the Council and had the final say (like a Speaker) on its proceedings.

In 1956, when India was reorganised into states and Union Territories (UT), Delhi was made the UT by an administrator appointed by the President. Its legislative control was taken away by abolishing the Assembly and Council.

But the demand of a democratic set-up in Delhi kept growing and in 1966, the Delhi Administration Act was passed, setting up an Interim Delhi Metropolitan Council with an Executive Council, which was headed by the Lieutenant Governor (L-G).

In 1952, Congress chose 34-year-old Brahm Prakash as its first Chief Minister and he remained in the post till 1956.
