A massive drama unfolded in the West Bengal assembly during a discussion on the Mamata Banerjee government’s resolution on alleged atrocities against Bengali migrants.
When Banerjee stood up to address the assembly, BJP lawmakers staged a protest and raised slogans, questioning the suspension of Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari on September 2.
Amid the uproar, Speaker Biman Banerjee suspended BJP chief whip Shankar Ghosh from the assembly for the remainder of the day for creating disorder. As Ghosh refused to leave, assembly marshals were called in, and he was physically dragged out of the House.
Later, BJP MLA Agnimitra Paul, who was shouting slogans, was also suspended, with the Speaker ordering women marshals to take her out. BJP’s Mihir Goswami and Ashok Dinda were also suspended.
The BJP alleged that democracy is dead in Bengal after its lawmakers were suspended from the assembly. The BJP legislators also alleged that water bottles were thrown at them from the treasury benches during the commotion.
In her speech, CM Mamata Banerjee alleged that the BJP is against the Bengali language, the poor, SCs and Hindus.
“A time will soon come when not a single BJP MLA will remain in Bengal. The people themselves will ensure it. BJP will face inevitable defeat, for no party that wages linguistic terror against Bengalis can ever win Bengal," she said.
The Chief Minister has been attacking the BJP over the alleged harassment of Bengali-speaking migrants in BJP-ruled states.
Banerjee said the opposition party does not want a discussion on the harassment of Bengalis. “BJP is a party of vote-chors, corrupt to the core, persecutors of Bengalis, and masters of deception. BJP is a national disgrace, and I condemn them in the strongest terms… We saw in Parliament how the BJP used CISF to harass our MPs," she said.
“They think they can stifle our voice in Bengal as well. Is this the extent of their audacity? Even if you chop my head off, I will continue to speak in Bengali," the CM added.
