In a cybersecurity breach at the US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) headquarters, a video showing an AI-generated image of US President Donald Trump kissing billionaire Elon Musk’s feet was broadcasted on a cafeteria television inside the office.
The incident was first reported by journalist Rachel Cohen and a video of the images being broadcast was shared by an X account owned by Anthony Lamesa.
The video was captioned with a text that read “LONG LIVE THE REAL KING."
The “King" reference was possibly a reaction to Trump’s recent move to scrap the proposed $9 congestion toll for vehicles entering Manhattan.
The 78-year-old former president celebrated the decision on Truth Social, a platform he owns, with a post where he said: “Congestion pricing is dead. Manhattan, and all of New York, is saved. Long Live The King!"
This was followed by the White House social media releasing an AI-generated image of Trump on a mock Time magazine cover, wearing a crown and with the headline replaced with “Trump".
It remains unclear who was responsible for the hacking but footage also appears to have originated from an X post from the previous week. The post was shared by @Squad_sussex96, which appears to be a Prince Harry and Meghan Markle fan account, but it does not have the text superimposed on the video.
HUD spokeswoman Kasey Lovett assured that “appropriate action will be taken" while dismissing the incident as “a waste of taxpayer dollars and resources."
This incident comes on the heels of growing criticism from Democrats and critics of Trump and Musk, who have taken to calling the SpaceX CEO “President Musk", highlighting the Tesla and X CEO’s influence within the current administration.
