A video showing French President Emmanuel Macron’s wife, Brigitte, seemingly slapping him before stepping off the plane in Vietnam has gone viral on social media.
Macron arrived in Hanoi on Sunday evening to start his Southeast Asia tour. However, the diplomatic mission was overshadowed by apparent ‘bickering’ between the couple.
The video shows Brigitte Macron reaching out toward President Macron, placing her hands on his face and appearing to push it aside, as the aircraft door opened at Hanoi airport.
The French president looked briefly startled but quickly composed himself and waved to the welcoming delegation through the exit gate.
Adding to the speculation was the fact that Brigitte was partially obscured during the interaction, with her face hidden behind the aircraft door.
Moments later, the couple descended the stairs together, though she appeared to decline the President’s offer to take his arm.
The brief and awkward exchange, captured on camera by the Associated Press, quickly sparked widespread discussion online.
Macron’s Office On Plane Incident
Macron’s office at first dismissed the images as inauthentic, but later confirmed they were genuine.
A close aide to the president described the moment as a harmless marital “squabble," while another member of his entourage downplayed its significance.
“It was a moment when the president and his wife were decompressing one last time before the start of the trip by joking around," the second source was quoted as saying by AFP.
“It’s a moment of togetherness. No more was needed to feed the mills of the conspiracy theorists," the source added, attributing the surge in negative reactions to pro-Russian accounts.
Meanwhile, Macron touched down in Hanoi to kick off his week-long tour of Southeast Asia, which includes scheduled visits to Indonesia and Singapore.
