The Trump administration’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), once led by Elon Musk, has quietly been dismantled months before its mandate ended, a report has claimed.

The US Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), a high-profile initiative launched by President Donald Trump to drastically cut down the federal bureaucracy, has effectively ceased to exist, months before the end of its original mandate, Reuters has reported.
Confirming the development, the report quoted Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Director Scott Kupor as saying that Elon Musk-DOGE “doesn’t exist," adding that it is no longer functioning as a “centralised entity."
According to the report, the OPM has now absorbed many of DOGE’s responsibilities, marking a quiet end to what was once one of Trump’s most publicised governance projects.
Created at the beginning of Trump’s second term, DOGE made sweeping interventions across federal agencies, attempting to restructure, shrink or redirect them to align with the President’s priorities.
Reuters reports that two of its prominent members have since shifted to the Design Studio, a new unit formed under an August executive order and led by Airbnb co-founder Joe Gebbia, whose mission is to “beautify" federal websites.
Gebbia had earlier served under DOGE’s Elon Musk-led team, while DOGE staffer Edward Coristine publicly urged followers to apply to the new design body, Reuters found.
DOGE’s decline is a marked contrast to the intense publicity it generated in its early months, with Trump, his cabinet and Musk frequently touting its efforts on social media.
At one point, Musk even held up a chainsaw at the Conservative Political Action Conference, proclaiming, “This is the chainsaw for bureaucracy," Reuters noted.
Despite DOGE’s claim of saving tens of billions of dollars, the report claims that external analysts were unable to verify these figures because the government provided no comprehensive breakdown.
The White House, however, maintained that Trump had stayed committed to reducing government waste.
“President Trump was given a clear mandate to reduce waste, fraud and abuse across the federal government, and he continues to actively deliver on that commitment," spokeswoman Liz Huston was quoted by the report as saying.
A signature DOGE measure, the government-wide hiring freeze, has also ended, Kupor confirmed.
“There is no target around reductions," he said.
Elon Musk, who once vowed to “delete the mountain" of regulations, had recently resurfaced in Washington, attending a White House dinner hosted by Donald Trump with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.
