A White House official said that along with Donald Trump’s latest executive order tariffs have been hiked on Beijing to 125% from 84% but with added fentanyl tariff of 20% it rose to 145%.

The United States effectively raised its tariff rate on Chinese imports to 145%, the White House confirmed. The hike follows President Donald Trump’s latest executive order, which increased duties on a wide range of Chinese goods to 125%, up from the previous 84%. The new rate builds on an existing 20% fentanyl-related tariff imposed earlier as part of the administration’s crackdown on the flow of synthetic opioids from China.
Trump’s 10 percent tariff for almost all countries except China will likely remain in place going forward, his top economic advisor Kevin Hassett said.
Earlier, Donald Trump announced a 90-day pause on higher tariffs against all countries except China, reversing a policy that had roiled global stock markets and spooked the American bond markets — a key barometer of investors’ faith in the US government’s ability to pay its debts.
Trump’s announcement leaves China facing a steep 125 percent tariff on top of existing 20 percent levies, and almost all other countries facing a baseline tariff of 10 percent.
Speaking to CNBC before markets opened on Thursday, Hassett, the director of the White House Economic Council, said that the 10 percent was likely here to stay.
“I think everybody expects the 10 percent baseline tariff is going to be the baseline," he said. “And it is going to take some kind of extraordinary deal for the president to go below there."
