Former US President and the Republican Presidential nominee in the 2024 race, Donald Trump, declared that he would act as a saviour of the social media platform TikTok if elected president. It was Trump who had banned the Chinese-owned platform through an executive order while he was in office a few years ago.

“For all of those who want to save TikTok in America, vote Trump,” he said in a video posted on Truth Social. “The other side is closing it up. But I’m now a big star on TikTok...We’re not doing anything with TikTok, but the other side is going to close it up.".

Trump’s not-so-veiled attack was on the Biden administration which, in April, signed a bill to force the parent company of TikTok to either sell the platform to an American enterprise or be banned in the USA.

The pivot to saving TikTok from Trump is seen as a move to secure votes with the younger crowd, something Trump has been attempting to do in recent days through various means, including doing interviews with Twitch streamers like Adin Ross.

The former president previously banned the platform in 2020 but the Chinese-owned company had the ban overturned in court. US federal agencies have long warned that the platform might be sharing user's personal data with the Chinese government, something the company has denied. The use of the application is already banned on government devices used by the US Army and Navy, according to the Independent.

Fast-forward to 2024, Trump himself joined TikTok in June and has taken to posting on the platform regularly, garnering over 10 million followers.
